Shopping
Delegate has a general store that supplies the town’s residents with food and necessities. There is a Post Office and a fruit barn. The nearest shops outside of Delegate are in Bombala, approximately half an hour away. Pambula also has shops, but it 1.5 hours away.
Schools, Education and Institutions
Children of Delegate attend the local Delegate Public School, and there is also a day care centre. High school students need to travel to Bombala, where they can attend Bombala High School.
Sports and Fitness
Delegate is a great location to go hiking and horse riding. Its open country landscape also offers a great opportunity to go off the track in a 4W4 or on a motorbike. The Delegate and Bendoc Rivers are both well known by the local fishermen as superior trout fishing streams. The Delegate Country Club has an 18 hole sand course and a friendly clubhouse. The Region is surrounded by National Parks, including Kosciuszko National Park, Snowy River National Park and Errinundra National Park. These parks have wonderful bushwalking tracks with panoramic views and Four Wheel Drive tracks for people to use. It is not far from the snow fields and Bombala, where there are more options for activities. The Delegate Art Centre is used for Art and Craft workshops. The Borderline Gallery is well known in the area for its excellent exhibitions, they also have art and craft for sale. The Woodwork room is situated at the School of Arts and is open most weekends to the public. The town has a tennis club, a pastoral and agricultural society, an anglers club, a golf club, a pony club, campdrafting activities and a school of arts.
Restaurants and Cafes
Delegate has a cafe and a hotel and the Delegate River Tavern & Tranquility Lodge. The Delegate Hotel is a true country pub with pressed ceilings and rooms decorated in heritage colours. Full of character and stories and offering great food, cold beer, good accommodation and friendly service – just what country pubs are all about. The Delegate Hotel is no exception. Counter meals are on offer seven days a week. The cafe offers great coffee and food too, there’s no need to go to other towns.
Distance from Cities and Transportation
Delegate is approximately half an hour from Bombala, 3 hours from Canberra, 6-7 hours from Sydney and 7 hours from Melbourne. There is limited public transport, but school buses are available.
Famous Landmarks
This historic building is not only of unique local significance, but has associations going back to the earliest establishment of European settlement in the colony. This building is of the type erected on the squattages in the mid 1840s when the squatters were first given some form of permanent occupancy and this hut undoubtedly dates from this period. Historical facts show the hut was originally used as a Manager’s residence (the first manager being Mr Donald Ross). The hut has been restored using timbers obtained locally and worked with tools such as adzes and broad axes by local craftsmen practising skills of a bygone era. The Hut is located one kilometre southwest of the township of Delegate, adjacent to the Bonang Highway and is open every day. Signposted in Hayden St, there is a scenic drive takes in the historic village of Bendoc, once a busy gold mining town. The Delegate River Tunnel diverted water from the original river to allow for gold fossicking. Drive into the beautiful forests of the South Eastern Plateau, where you can detour to the Errinundra Boardwalk in the most southern rainforest in mainland Australia. Next stop is the small settlements of Bonang and the Delegate River before ending back up in Delegate. McKillops Bridge spanning the mighty Snowy River is also a lovely scenic drive and Delegate Hill is worth a look, with a wonderful view of the surrounding country side. The most historically important building in Delegate is the former Court House and Police Station, a single storey building erected in two stages the first being completed in 1890 and the second in 1920. The front section which is the later section has a low pitched gabled roof and coloured windows. The rear section has a hipped roof and a kitchen made out of timber.
History
The tiny village of Delegate has a reputation as one the finest trout fishing destinations in New South Wales. The partially dirt road from Bombala runs through Delegate and continues to Orbost in Victoria\’s East Gippsland. The road has changed little since it was established by a number of explorers who moved through the area looking for suitable grazing land and bringing herds of cattle into the fertile plains of East Gippsland. By 1835 George McKillop had travelled through Delegate and established a substantial holding in East Gippsland. He was followed in 1830-40 by Angus McMillan who became one of the largest East Gippsland land owners. Delegate Station, the starting point for many of these expeditions, was one of the earliest runs on the Monaro. It had been established by Robert Campbell in the late 1820s and it subsequently gave its name to both the local river and the small township which grew up beside that river. Today Delegate is a tiny isolated community which services the surrounding area and is used by keen trout fisherman as a base for their fishing expeditions along the river.
